Algae growth is unfortunately a common problem in the mini pond, because the water heats up easily

Whether in the small garden, on the balcony or the terrace:

the mini pond is a welcome alternative to the water garden.

Due to the limited water volume,

it is important to take proper care of the mini pond -

because only clear water and vital water plants in the trough

or zinc tub are a pleasure for the hobby gardener and are the

prerequisite for a healthy biological balance in the mini pond.

High water temperatures in the mini pond favour algae

In order to maintain the biological balance in the mini pond

for a long time, plants or parts of plants that are too luxuriant,

dead and withered must be regularly cut and removed with

garden shears - otherwise they will pollute the water,

start to rot and promote algae growth.

Increased water temperatures during the summer months

also lead to algae growth.

Unfortunately, this problem cannot be completely avoided due

to the low water volume of mini ponds.

However, you can counteract this by choosing the right tank:

Wooden vats have the best insulation effect.

Zinc tubs are rather unfavorable because the metal is a very

good heat conductor. Floating plants such as water lettuce
can also delay the heating process somewhat.

An ideal location for the mini pond is a place sheltered from the wind,

which is in the shade during the hot midday hours,

but gets some sunlight the rest of the day.

The small duckweed tends to spread quickly. Therefore regular fishing is advisable. Very handy for this is an old kitchen sieve

Thread algae in the mini pond indicate calcareous water.

In case of strong algae growth,

you should subject your mini pond to a basic cleaning:

Remove the existing water,

remove the plants and clean the inside of the vessel thoroughly by

removing digested sludge and other plant remains.

Then put the plants back in and fill the mini pond with fresh water that is as low in lime as possible.

Further care tips for mini ponds

Due to the high evaporation in summer, water must be refilled regularly.

Tap water is sufficient as long as it is not too hard.

If available, rainwater - e.g. from an underground cistern - should

always be preferred.

Fresh water also adds fresh oxygen to the water already present

in the mini pond, which makes it difficult for algae to grow.

A small water feature has the same effect: It not only looks decorative,

the light splashing also has a relaxing and invigorating effect.

A small downer: You have to do without mini water lilies in this case, because the water movements do not get them.
