Spring care for your lawn

As soon as the daffodils are in full bloom, the lawn grows again. 

To start the season, you should first provide it with a lawn fertilizer and mow it to a normal height (about four centimeters). 

Two to three weeks after fertilization, it is advisable to mow it briefly (to about two centimeters) and scarify the lawn. 

The advantage of this measure is that the blades of the scarifier remove moss cushions and lawn felt, which means that the lawn roots are once again supplied with sufficient oxygen. 

Immediately after scarifying, bald spots in the green carpet are reseeded with fresh lawn seeds. 

In this way, the lawn remains vital and attractive in the new season.

Sowing in vegetable garden

When the ground has warmed up a little in April, the sowing can really start in the vegetable garden. 

The vegetables you can sow in the vegetable patch this month include cauliflower, peas, carrots, radishes, spinach and salad. 

The best way to draw the rows is to first tighten the strings and pull the hoe along them. 

When you insert the seeds into the grooves, it is important to observe the recommended sowing depth and the specified row spacing for each vegetable.

Planting work in the ornamental garden

April is also the ideal month for many ornamental plants to be planted in the garden. 

The spring to-do list includes planting evergreen shrubs such as the rhododendron, ornamental grasses such as the Chinese reed and ground cover such as the cranesbill. 

For them to grow successfully, good soil preparation is also crucial here. 

Loosen the soil thoroughly, remove weeds and, if necessary, add compost. 

You can loosen loamy soils with coarse sand to make them more permeable.

Rhododendrons, for example, are happy if you improve the soil with leaf compost and bark humus before planting. 

In addition, the root ball should protrude a few centimetres from the soil. 

Regardless of whether you plant shrubs, grasses or perennials: Be sure to consider the individual requirements of the plants when choosing a location. 

Maintain sufficient distance from the neighbours and water the ornaments well after planting.
