Gardening: Prefer celery: To sow the seeds
For celery to develop optimally, it must be sown in time.
With these instructions,
sowing and precultivation of the popular vegetable is successful.
Sowing celery: The most important facts in brief
A preculture of celery is recommended at the end of February/beginningof March so that it can be planted outdoors in May after the ice saints. The seeds are sown in seed boxes, only lightly pressed and well moistened.Celery germinates fastest in a bright place at temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius. When the first real leaves appear, the young celery plants are pricked.
When should you sow celery?
Young plants of celeriac and celeriac stalks can be planted for about eight weeks.
Therefore, plan sufficient time for the preculture.
Sowing for early cultivation under glass or foil sows already from the middle of January.
For outdoor cultivation, sowing is usually done from the end of February/beginning of March.
Cut celery, similar to parsley, can also be preferred in pots from March onwards.
As soon as late frosts are no longer expected,
usually after the ice saints in May, celery can be planted out.
How to sow celery properly?
Let the celery seeds soak in water overnight
and then sow them in seed boxes filled with soil.
Press the seeds well with a board, but do not cover them with soil.
Since celery is a light germinator, the seeds are only
thinly covered with sand - about half a centimeter.
Carefully sprinkle the substrate with water and cover the box with a transparent lid.
Then place the box in a bright, warm place.
A light windowsill or a greenhouse with temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius is well suited.
The optimal germination temperature for celery is 20 degrees Celsius,
temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius will later encourage the plants to shoot.
Until the cotyledons appear, keep the substrate evenly moist, but not too wet.
Prick celery
To obtain strong, well-rooted young plants,
pricking out is very important in celery.
As soon as the first two or three real leaves have formed,
the time has come.
Carefully lift the plants out of the container with the help of a pricking
stick and shorten long roots a little - this will stimulate root growth.
Then place the plants in small pots with growing soil.
Alternatively, pot plates with 4 x 4 cm individual pots are also suitable.
Water the plants well afterwards.
