Good and bad neighbors in the garden - the basic rules and list

many excellent gardeners know the secret of a beautiful but also a healthy garden , and these are the good and bad neighbors in the garden .

Apart from the fact that some plants can help you stimulate the growth of other plants, there are also those that can completely slow it down or even prevent it.

Before any gardening venture,

you should check which plants are good neighbors in the vegetable garden or who with whom and who behind whom can grow best.

Indeed, awareness of this topic is the key to success in fruit and vegetable production.

Good and bad neighbors in the garden - the basic rules

The good and bad neighbors in the orchard and vegetable garden are the last, but one of the most important in a series of gardening rules. You should check the following conditions beforehand:

1. suitability of the local climate for your favorite plants - just because you like the taste of a particular fruit or vegetable does not mean that it makes it suitable for growing in your climate so it would be a good idea to check which plants are suitable for the local climate before planting because it will save both time and money when maintaining the garden,

2. crop rotation in the garden - a table that can help you inform about the growth patterns of different types of plants can be found on almost every gardening portal or magazine, and is especially useful for designing a crop rotation plan that can avoid the accumulation of soil diseases,

3. knowledge of local weeds - weeds in the region where you are can cause various plant diseases, so their knowledge is useful for information on which weeds attract harmful insects and which attract friendly predators,

4. seasonal cycle of pests - each season attracts different types of pests that can be very easily identified, but you should also prepare for them so that you can prevent them in the future,

5. seasonal plant diseases - find out about various diseases that can affect certain crops, because in this way you will know how to treat them and how to prevent them,

6. climate - do not think that the climate will always follow the dates on the calendar but be prepared that certain temperatures may come sooner or later in your area, and this will help you prepare the plants for frost, snow or heavy rain,

7. Animals - Depending on your location, you are likely to have a lot of trouble with animals that consider your garden their lunch so it would be a good idea to fence off the plants and protect them in various ways from predators.

Good and bad neighbors in the garden - how to determine them?

In many gardening books it is very easy to find different tables that bring combinations of good and bad neighbors in the garden ,

but keep in mind that there will always be some exception that confirms the rule.

Namely, plants in the garden affect each other by secreting phytoncides - active biological substances that affect the entire life process of plants.

In addition to preventing pests and encouraging the growth of neighboring plants, phytoncides can also block their growth.

It seems that several hundred years ago, the Indians noticed this problem, which is why they invented a rule called "three sisters" .

Namely, they practiced the neighboring cultivation of corn, beans and pumpkin because they noticed that the diversity of their characteristics can have an enriching effect.

In other words, the growth of corn trees gives beans natural support for stem growth.

Then beans , like all legumes, improve the state of nitrogen in the soil which supports the great nutritional needs of corn.

In doing so, the pumpkin , due to its rapid and large growth, casts shadows on the weed and serves as its natural blocker.

Of course, even the ancient Indians did not notice this overnight, and probably did not even read it in books that did not exist at the time,

but observed the behavior and growth of neighboring plants in the garden .

Over time, they learned which plants are good neighbors and which are not, so they discover new characteristics year after year.

Keep in mind that the whole truth is not exactly who is a good or bad neighbor in the garden.

Healthy plant growth is determined not only by these factors but also by a number of environmental influences (e.g. soil pH, wildlife, surrounding plants).

That’s why your natural spotting of changes in the garden is the best rule for determining good and bad neighbors.
