The 3 most important garden works in September

From harvesting to lawn care to nature conservation: In September there is a lot to do in the garden. Here you will find the most important gardening tasks at a glance.
MSG/Frank SchuberthIn September many apple varieties are ready for harvest. Roll collectors make it easier to pick up fallen fruit
in September the harvest in the fruit and vegetable garden is at the top of the to-do list.
If the lawn was somewhat damaged in summer,
it can now be renewed. And the animals are also happy if we do something for them this month.
Harvest in the orchard and vegetable garden
Depending on the variety, the first apples and pears are already ripe in September.
The harvest begins as soon as the fruits have developed
their typical color and can be easily removed from the stalk.
Since not all fruits ripen equally fast, harvesting usually has to be done in stages.
Especially older, richly bearing fruit trees often discard part of their fruit prematurely.
Small damaged spots on the fallen fruit can be cut
out without hesitation and the fruits can be processed into puree, compote or juice.
Elderberries can be harvested as soon as all fruits
are colored blue-black.
With the help of a fork they are stripped from the panicles and then enjoyed heated.
Tomatoes also provide plenty of fruit in September.
In order for them to ripen well until the end of the season in October,
the main shoots should now be cut off and new flowers should be removed regularly.
In this way all the energy can flow into the already developed fruits.
In the case of peppers, it is also worth breaking off newly formed flowers.
Sweet corn is harvested as soon as the seed threads turn dark brown
and a milky white juice emerges when the seeds are pressed.

If the lawn has suffered greatly in summer, individual areas can be repaired in September
Those who have not managed to sow a lawn in spring will have another chance to do so in September.
You can now also repair bald spots in the lawn. In September,
the soil still has sufficient residual heat,
which makes it easier for the lawn seeds to germinate.
Before sowing you should loosen the soil, remove any weeds,
stones and moss and level the area.
The grass seeds can be evenly distributed using a spreader.
Afterwards they are lightly worked in and thoroughly watered with a sprinkler.
Make sure that the lawn never dries out in the following weeks.
You can sow green manure on harvested beds until October.
The green manure plants loosen the soil and enrich the soil with organic material.
Nature conservation in the garden

Late summer is the ideal time for cleaning nest boxes, because in autumn the first new tenants move in
When it comes to the most important gardening work in September,
the subject of nature conservation must not be neglected.
As soon as the last young birds have flown out,
the nesting boxes should be cleaned.
Knock first to warn possible intermediate tenants such as dormouse or wood mouse.
Then remove the old bird nests together with
the mites or bird fleas living in them and sweep the boxes thoroughly.
You can now also hang up new nesting boxes.
Hedgehogs are already slowly starting to look for winter quarters in September.
You can support the spiny creatures by creating suitable quarters for them.
They like piles of brushwood or leaves in a sheltered place in the garden.
Also a self-built hedgehog house,
which is covered with dry branches and foliage, they like to accept as shelter.
