who would like to harvest also in this year own vegetable or enjoy at a sumptuous bloom splendour in the garden,
can for it in March the foundation-stone put.
In the ornamental garden is in March planting time for many shrubs and herbs.
In addition, the sowing of vegetables and summer flowers as well as the division of perennials are on the to-do list this month.
We show you the most important 3 gardening tasks at a glance and explain what exactly needs to be done.
Planting trees and bushes
Spring, especially March, is the classic planting season for trees and shrubs, along with autumn.
Spring planting is particularly suitable for larger trees, which then have sufficient time until autumn to form a strong root system.
In this way, they do not tip over again during the first autumn storm.
Spring planting is also suitable for frost-sensitive shrubs such as rhododendron, cherry laurel or hydrangea.
They survive the winter much better than if they were planted in autumn.
But anyone who thinks that "dig a hole and plant pure" is enough is far from the truth. First of all,
you should find out about both the location requirements of the shrub and the existing soil conditions.
Once the right location has been found,
you should make sure when planting that the planting hole is about twice as deep and wide as the root ball of the tree or shrub.
In this way you give the roots the opportunity to spread and take root. Also loosen the soil in the planting hole a little.
Mix the removed soil 1:1 with ripe compost or planting soil to give the plants a good start.
Place the root ball in the middle of the planting hole and fill the space in between with a little soil.
Then straighten the tree or shrub and fill the hole completely with soil. Finally,
kick the soil all around the tree or shrub and water the freshly planted shrub well.
Share perennials and grasses
March is the optimal time to rejuvenate summer and autumn flowering perennials and grasses - i.e.
those whose flowering does not begin until after the day of St. John - by dividing them.
By this measure the plants remain vital and become more flowering again.
As a nice side effect, you also get a lot of new plants. First loosen the soil and remove the root ball.
A very compact and firm root network is best shared with a sharp spade or a large knife.
Since smaller pieces grow better than larger ones, you should make sure that each piece has at least two shoots, but is only the size of a fist.
Perennials and grasses with very loose roots can be easily divided by hand. Sick or dried root parts should be removed during division.
Prefer vegetables and summer flowers
If you prefer to sow summer flowers or vegetables such as peppers, chilies, eggplants or tomatoes yourself instead of buying early seedlings,
you should start sowing now.
The seeds germinate most reliably if they are placed on the windowsill in a growing tray or mini-greenhouse.
Fill a tray with soil and spread the seeds evenly.
Find out beforehand under what conditions the seeds germinate. If they are light germinators,
the seeds are simply pressed on, if they are dark germinators, the seeds must be covered with soil. Finally,
press the substrate well and moisten the soil with an atomizer. Then place the lid on the growing tray.
Place the Mini-Greenhouse on a warm windowsill by the south window.
