Artichokes (Cynara scolymus)

MSG/Alexandra Ichters Also as an ornamental plant the artichoke is an eye-catcher in the garden |
Gourmets know exactly: If you want to harvest beautiful large flowers,
you must start early with the sowing of this thistle-like and unusual plant.
Since artichokes require a germination temperature of almost 20 degrees Celsius, they should be pre-cultivated indoors.
In order for the seeds to germinate faster, they should be placed in warm water for a day before sowing.
Sow the seeds in a sowing box with humus-rich soil and place them in a warm and bright place.
Within the next two to three weeks the first seedlings should already show.
The young plants need a lot of light so that they do not spoil.
If the weather doesn't want to play along, you should help with a plant lamp.
As soon as the young plants are too dense, they must be pricked and moved.
In mid to late April, the young artichokes may move to a sunny spot in the bed.
Black salsify (Scorzonera hispanica)

The black salsify is - wrongly - also called the "asparagus of the little man".
It contains three times as much iron and calcium as asparagus.
On top of that it is a real vitamin bomb.
Black salsify seeds can be sown directly in the field from the end of March to the beginning of April.
However, the bed must be prepared before sowing. For this you should loosen the soil for three weeks already.
Check the seed for shelf life, because black salsify seeds lose their germination power fairly quickly.
The seeds are sown in approximately three centimeter deep seed furrows with a row spacing of 30 centimeters.
After three to four weeks the first seedlings should show.
If these are too dense, they can be separated at a distance of seven to ten centimeters.
Velvet grass, hare tail grass (Lagurus ovatus)

The white and "puscheligen" ears of the velvet grass remind of cute
hare-tails - therefore also the colloquial name as hare-tail-grass or hare-tail.
The unusual sweet grass can be brought forward on the windowsill in March, before it is then put outdoors in May.
Sow the seeds in a seed tray and place it in a light location.
After about three to four weeks the seedlings must be pricked.
In May the velvet grass can move to a sunny outdoor location.
The soil there should be well-drained and sandy.
Garden foxtail (Amaranthus caudatus)

MSG/Beate Leufen-Bohlsen The flowers of the garden foxtail are a striking decoration in the bed |
Tausendschön - under this name the garden foxtail is also well known.
The annual plant, which actually originates from South America,
impresses with its beautiful long and dark red flower ears,
which remind of foxtails. If you want to decorate your garden with this ornamental plant,
you should already start with the preculture in March.
All you need is a sowing tray in which the seeds can germinate at a temperature between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius.
After about two weeks, lower the temperature to 12 to 15 degrees Celsius.
Three to four weeks later then the seedlings can be pricked and transferred into small pots.
After the ice saints, the young plants may be put outside.
baby's breath (Gypsophila)

MSG/Alexandra Ichters The delicate flowers of the baby's breath bring a romantic look to your garden |
No bouquet, wedding decoration or garden should be without it: the baby's breath. The filigree annual herb is particularly suitable for rock gardens,
but can also be kept in a tub. Since the flowering time - depending on the time of
sowing - lies between May and June, the baby's breath should be brought forward to March at the latest.
Seed the seeds in a seed tray with commercial growing soil.
The temperature should be about 15 degrees Celsius.
After about four weeks the seedlings can be put into small pots and cultivated at about 10 degrees Celsius.
If you live in milder climates, you can also sow the seeds directly in the field at the end of March.
In the case of direct sowing, the young seedlings should then be thinned out to a distance of about 30 centimeters.
Simply make your own soil for sowing
If you do not feel like buying soil, you can easily make your own: All you need is garden soil,
ripe compost and sand of medium grain size.
Mix all components in equal parts. However, make sure that the garden soil contains as few weeds as possible.
If you bury the top five to ten centimeters, you are on the safe side.
By the way, the soil of a molehill is excellent for sowing soil.
